Just got back from the track. 68 motor 10.5 :1, new cam etc.
Motor has 2000 miles on it.
Just went to pure synthetic . Long story short.
200 mile round trip 8 passes and # 1 intake rocker adjuster and pushrod are damaged. . If I bypass cam bearing oiling ,say the bearing has spun ,will the cam still receive it's needed oil?
Btw . On plug out cranking I do get oil out of head bolt ,but none at the rocker shaft.

Racing was fun . Fully dressed 68 dart convert ran 16.3 @ 86 mph
Once oiling is fixed I'm shooting for 15's also hit 23 mpg .

Got to wonder if you touched that #1 valve on the piston, bent the shaft thas stuck in the guide a bit, and that jammed the rocker/pushrod. Bent pushrods are often a sign of a valve sticking or not moving freely.

Oil out of a head bolt or the last rocker shaft bolt?

Is the rocker shaft on right side up?

Stock rockers or rollers?

Didn't bend any pushrods. Just gauled the push rod cup. Rocker adjuster got mushed up .020". Rocker train is stock . I think I'm not oiling enough?
As I said the oil will come out of the head bolt under cranking no plugs in.
Running after two to three min no oil in the shaft.
Rocker shaft is in correct oil holes towards springs.
I guess my biggest concern is if I bypass the cam will it still get it's needed oil?

Oil is coming out of head bolt. None into rocker shaft.
I can't figure out how I made it home with such little oiling on the top end?
Guess the slant will always get you home!

Sounds like the rocker shaft is upside down.

Thanks so much for the help. Going to pull the shaft off and have a look see.
How much clearance is there usually between bolt and oil feed hole into the rocker shaft?

On the "early" rocker arm shafts, the rocker shaft holes are 7/16 (.438) & the bolt shank is 3/8 (.375)
The good news is that oil is getting past the cam so vote # 2 that the rocker arm shaft is not installed correctly.

Also the synthetic... if you ever got it up there! I have raced Mobil 1 in a turbo'd 250 HP 2.6L engine for 6-7 minutes with falling, then erratic, and then 0 oil pressure for the the last 2-3 minutes, and found NO scratches or damage anywhere upon a full teardown!

Good synthetic is your friend....

Just took rockers off and checked the position. Holes are down and pointing at the valves. Here is what's happening. Cold no plugs "in" ,cranking I get tons of oil. Once running nothing. I didn't install a cam button on the rebuild ( dumb me) . Could the cam be moving out of the correct spot when running to cause this ? I'm getting just a drop or two up to the shaft every couple of seconds. Shaft is not getting wet at all.

That sounds reasonable.

Aren't the holes in the rocker shaft supposed to point toward the pushrods? Is the shaft reversed end for end?

It's been so long since I had one apart I forget.

You are 180 degrees off. The holes in the rocker arm are supposed to point towards the carb. You can see pictures of the rocker arm shaft and rocker arm oil holes here: http://www.slantsix.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=46756

Sad news. Turns out all 4 cam bearings are smoked. Please!!! every one learn from my oops and measure your bearing clearances. Turns out the ifford cam is a wee bit bigger. Hope to have new cam bearings installed and put back together to enjoy the rest of the early winter.

You bought a cam from Clifford? You have my sympathies. Go to a cam grinder for a cam, not a manifold company.
