Hi, While working on my '74 198 Duster I found fiber washers behind the timing crank sprocket and in front of it. I don't seem to recall that they are mentioned much when talking about timing set replacement. Ok to leave them out? and considering how hard it is to find a replacement timing set I bet it will be a whole lotta fun tracking these down. Is the best replacement timing set the Cloyes double roller that you piece together with the part numbers you guys provide? Thankyou very much! Also the front pan gasket with the triangle ends. Mine has a nub under each triangle. Is it there to help locate it in the corners. I don't see a depression where they ( the small nubs ) would fit into. Should I sand them flat? Thanks again.! |

I have also seen those fiber washers on a few SL6 engines we tore-down. We never put them back in when rebuilding and never have any problem(s). (I still do not know why these were used on some SL6 engines and not others) DD |

hello doctor- i last replaced a timing set in my 225 sl6(77 f body) about 85 . it had slackened and jumped a few teeth on the sprockets. had about 200k. did not have theplastic washers(i was original owner). the job went ok, but it contuously leaked a small amount of oil from the opening for the crankshaft on the front cover. could never figure out what caused it. cover was not bent or damaged. seems to me there should have been a snap in ring gasket there which prevented leakage. uncle moe told me it could have been the oil slinger, but i didnt disturb that. what think you? thanks tons bob fisher |

Thank you guys! I got a sealed power timing set and installed it today. Doc, thanks for the response on the fiber washers. I left the one behind the crank timing sprocket in place since it was bonded to the crank. Got the dots all lined up and the distributor rotor is pointing to #6...so I think I am on track! just need to button everything up in time for Clay City! thanks again! |
