Post subject: | Dumb question - exhaust/intake triangle washers |
This feels like such a dumb question, but I get so confused every time I read the installation instructions for the exhaust/intake that to make it simple, I will just ask: The triangle washers on the intake/exhaust manifolds are referred to as having a "cup" side which is to be installed towards the cylinder head. OK, if I read that correctly, that means that the triangle washers FLAT side (meaning NOT the domed side of these washers) is supposed to face OUT and the domed side or "cup" side should face toward the cylinder head. Do I understand the orientation correctly? If so, this really doesn't seem right at all. It seems like the reverse should be true and the flat side of the triangle washers should face the cylinder head, dome out. Especially because the washers would flatly rest against the intake/exhaust 'pads'. Otherwise the nuts would then be tightening into the washer dish. Last time I saw these washers tightened this way, the washers looked askew. That didn't seem right. Someone please explain to me. Thanks |

Flat side towards the head. Getting into semantics here, what you read as cupped side refers to the "female" cup extending into the washer, not the "male" cup coming out of it. |

I'll word it differently concave towards cylinder head convex towards nuts |

Just to add one more tip: The two washers at extreme ends of manifold are round with concave facing away from engine and castled side of their nuts are nestled into concave. |

THANK YOU! That IS the way I thought these nuts are supposed to go on and that makes abundant sense. I don't know about anyone else, but the way the installation instructions read, "cup" side could literally have meant either side of the washer depending on the intention of the manual writer. I can't be the first person to be confused by this. ![]() |

It's a matter of semantics but "cup" generally refers to a negative curvature or as was stated above a "concave" surface. A positive curvature would be a dome or "convex" surface. The orientation is as you're looking at the surface. If the surface curves away from your point of view it is concave and forms a cavity or cup. |

That is what I originally thought, but then, I had a second thought. And a third. And I confused myself. And I wanted reassurance. Thank you ![]() |
