I will post this here as this spot gets most traffic. I picked up 62 lancer 170, post car. plenty rough but I like the goofy lookin toad!!! lookin for some guys knowledgable about these beasts! first question I have is: can I use 63 dart gas tank I n it????? that's the lastest tank I can get is 63. I realize I have to fab all needed sheetmetal!! its all there, body rough, engine turns over, back seat and headliner real good. i'm excited, but then a snowcone gets me excited!! LOL |

Hi Barbee. I had one of those briefly, a `62 Lancer 170 post. It was a lost cause when I bought it, but I couldn't stand watching it rot with chickens living in it. It was so far gone when I got it that it never really had a chance. The fate of my `62 Valiant 200, 4DS has been much more pleasant. It is currently in the stages of getting a drive train, after sitting on stands for years. A `63 Val/Dart tank will physically fit, but the sending unit, pre-63, was located on the right side of the tank. It was moved to the center in `63. You will need to somehow extend the fuel line to reach the center of the tank. In my case, I have replaced the fuel line, which was 50 years old and full of rust and crap from the deteriorated tank. I pulled the old line out from the back. You are right to be excited. Lancers are fairly rare. You will probably find more Forward Look DeSoto's than you will Lancers. I hope you know how to weld. I had to replace all 4 corners of the floor in my Valiant. Speaking of which, check the cowl drains on the firewall and clear any debris you might find. There is one near the throttle rod and another underneath the heater box. These may or may not have their rubber flaps intact. Nobody remembers them and if they rot out, ALL of the water that flows into the fresh-air inlet will run straight into the car. Good luck. You have found yourself a fine ride. Pics? |

thanks for the reply. I just pulled the tank. sure inside is rusty but pored out some old gas in it and wasn't full of rust? go figure. glad the new 63 tank will fit. that 62 tank is TINY!! LOL I've fooled with these old cars since 80's. I can weld, I do need better welder, this little Hobart NEVER laid down good bead. I will have to replace left rear frame rail and patch right, but I can do it. floors are EASY!! it is rougher than what I usually buy, but they are scarce and the price w as cheap enough. its ALL there..... I noticed NOONE cariies NEW starter for it. they have reapir stuff. are the gears different????? I do appreciate any help as I am in new waters with this toad!!! |

I believe the starter for a newer engine, the normal MoPar starter that they put on everything, will fit. Both the Lancer that I had before, and the Valiant, came to me with the familiar MoPar starter. To be honest, I thought the factory had changed to the new type of starter by `62. I learn new things all the time. |

My 62 Val has the 63 tank in it, works fine. Unless yours is Canadian I believe the standard starter fits them all 61 and later. (I heard that Canadian and 60 used an odd starter, I may be wrong on that, but my US 62 was the normal one) |

I have an unmolested `61 Valiant and it has the Auto-Lite starter. According to the service manual for the `62 Valiant, the stock starter was the Chrysler built 2095150 starter, which is the one that was used from `62 forward. According to this article - http://www.hemmings.com/hmn/stories/201 ... ure23.html Quote: The Chrysler-built gear reduction starter was introduced in 1962 and remained the same basic unit that was used in all six-cylinder and V-8 passenger cars and light trucks until 1987, although several Autolite units were still used in later truck and manual transmission applications.
The `62 Valiant service manual does not indicate an alternate starter for a manual transmission model. A normal MoPar starter should bolt right up to your bell housing with no problems.

Welcome to the forum and congrats on your new ride. The later model "mini" starter is readily available at reasonable cost and it will fit your engine. That's the route I'm taking. At most you'll have to change the terminals or pick up an adapter harness. Many will bolt up with no modification. |

thanks for the replies. confusing thing about the starter was that rock auto and o reilly auto parts, both showed only rebuilt parts and kits for the 62 lancer!!!! weird!! I pulled out the starter, and yep it looks like the regular old mopar starter.... |

You can get the tank boiled out at a rad shop and coated on the inside if it is not too bad. I can look up a coating when I get back home ina few days if you are interested. Good luck with this! |

Good Luck with your project! I have been doing my wagon for about 5 years now and everything is hard. But it's worth it! Let me know if I can help with anything. I post most of my pictures over at FABO cause it easier. I think the 63 tank is your best bet for fit and function. I have a fair 62 tank if you want to try and keep it near stock. Just let me know.... |

I've never tried those coatings for the inside of tank. my tank has one screw patching a hole. it might be marginally uusable, but I've seen lots worse. I would love to find original better tank. I get diferent advice on using a 63 tank. I do have a 64 tank sitting on ground. filler necl location is said to be large problem. |
