Post subject:  Swaping Flywheels

Hello Folks I am newbie to the board and had a question about my slant 6 in my 63 Savoy I just picked up in June of this year (Canadian car). I was wondering if a newer flywheel will bolt up to my slant 6 so I can switch to the newer style mini starter.Right now it has a Prestolite direct drive and I would like to change it.I should mention that I am going to change the bellhousing also so I can bolt a 4 speed to it.Anyway thank you all in advance for your opinions.Jeds67 :?

I believe the standard mopar mini starters fit the stock flywheel. I have one off a 99 durango 318 that I was planning to install soon.

Yes the mini starter will bolt in but will not engage. The newer stock starters or even the full size do not fit the 63 slant 6 Canadian cars because they have 10 teeth on the drive gear. The Prestolite only has 9.

If you get a newer flywheel (62-up maybe, but certainly 63-up), then you can use the mini starter or a std Mopar gear reduction starter. All my cars are swapped over to the mini starter - saves 8-10 lbs.

In 1962 when they changed to the gear reduction starter in the US they went to a coarser ring gear on the flywheel, I believe 130 teeth. It sounds like they might have continued to use the direct drive starter in Canada which probably means that your flywheel still has the fine tooth ring gear. The rest of the flywheel is the same so you can swap to the later style ring gear or find a later flywheel with the coarser teeth. In 1968 they increased the inner register diameter so you need to find a US flywheel from 1962 to 1967. Someone has also figured out a way to fit a mini starter with a fine tooth drive gear, do a search.

Slant flywheel is 122 tooth. You will also need a small register to fit your crank.

Basically... you need a 122 tooth SL6 flywheel with the small centre hole. (in the USA that was 62 - 67 w/ the gear reduction starter)

I have just found a 62 or 63 4 speed trans. Will this fit the 122 tooth small hole flywheel or do I need a different fo that one too.

No matter which standard trans you use you can use the small hole flywheel.

The change comes when you go to a large register crank.

You will need the correct bell housing to go with the 4 speed....
