Post subject:  i just rebuilt my engine. clattering noise

hello this is my first post.

i just got a 1970 dodge dart.

225 motor

i rebuilt it and i started it up and theres a loud clattering almost every cylinder

only thing i can think of is rod bearings

is there supposed to be room for the rod to move from side to side on the crank side?

Did you put the main bearings in with the holes toward the block or does the rods have a lot of side to side play? You may have a forged crank with rods from a cast crank.

and is there supposed to be a lot of oil splatter when i open up the valve covers i wasnt getting ANY oil to the top of the head

Not a lot of oil unless you are at a very high rev. It should be a very slow flow the rockers will throw oil at high revs.

Rod big end side play should be around .006" to .012" (from my early FSM). Did you measure the side play? I.e., how much is 'A LOT' ??

What did you do/change in the rebuild? Do you know if this was the original 1970 engine?

And have you adjusted the valves yet? As above for the oil in the head; just seeping out of the rockers at idle.

Oil pump gasket maybe leaking allowing air to be drawn into the oil pump inlet check the gasket fit to the pump and the block.

yea the rod play was atleast 2 mm side to side.....

i used std size bearings... i thought it would be ok.

i think it is the original motor. how do i check?

im probably just gunna pull the engine and drop a 360.

Was the car running when you got it? What is the engine"s history?

Are the connecting rods you used during the rebuild the same ones that came out of the engine or did the con rods get swapped with something else?

The reason I ask is that the 225 slant six connecting rods change to a narrower width, when the engines started using a cast crankshaft.
You may have cast crank rods on a forged crank,... that would lead to a lot of rod journal "side play" and running noise.
