| Post subject: | 1983 904 & 9.25 to 1976 225 Volare? |
Hey, everyone. So, I have a parts 1983 2wd Ramcharger with a 318 (no good) with a good 904 and a good 9.25 rear end. I was wondering if these would bolt on no problem with a 1976 225 Volare. I want to go for a mildly built 225 and I thought these would be some good parts to start with. Getting mixed messages on the 904 mating to a 225, so any help is appreciated. Thank you all! |

Slant Six 904/ 727 bell housing has a different bolt pattern from V8 housing and would need a hard to find adapter plate to get V8 904 to mate up with slant six. All is not lost if V8 trans is good, just swap its guts into slant six transmission case, being mindful of any shaft spline count and size differences between the two in regards to converter fitment. If mixing and matching transmission guts is above your ability look for a used slant six 904, and bolt it up. Keep in mind that 1967 and older will have small hole at end of crank shaft so to make it easy you need to be looking for a 1968 and newer transmission so it will mate up to Volare without requiring custom converter snout. Ramcharger rear end would need to be narrowed to fit under Volare, just by how much I don't know. 9.25 rear-end is a bit on the too HD side for a car, and probably is fitted with a too low gear set for your car. In other words 4.11:1 or lower, and I suspect bolt pattern will not match your wheels as well. The axel gear you would be looking for would be in the sub 2.00:1 range I'm thinking. |

Well, that addressed my concerns. I'll have to rethink the project. Thank you for the quick reply. |

You can't narrow the 8.25 or 9.25 rear ends because they use the C-Clip on the end of the axle to retain the shafts at the diff (it can be done but the machining cost is about the same as buying a plug and play 8 3/4" rear axle whole...you can also solely buy axle shafts from Strange to do the job, but then again...price is a factor)...The FMJ bodies can swap axles freely, and a lot of late Gran Fury and Diplomat cop cars were made with sure grip 3.21 8.25 and the HD package could come with the 9.25 rear M-body axles depending on the needs of the entity. |
