So you might want to read this thread first for the whole story then come back to this one...

Now that you have read that thread I will just start posting pictures.

It may not look like much but this little "101" stamping means that this is in fact the first Hilborn unit made for a slant. It is also the same one that was "loaned" out to the Dragmaster team and ran on the Dragmaster Dart Six rail in 1964.

Engine #1 "The red one"...

This engine was run in a Porsche sometime in the 60's or 70's in the Seattle/Oregon area, unfortunately that is about all I know. This engine was an added bonus and came with the "Blue engine" (the same one that was in the 56 Alpha that you read about in the linked post). This engine ran the 3 Weber 45's, Isky 505-A cam, Joe Hunt magneto, 8" VW clutch and a dry sump system. It looks like it had a recent rebuild and ran a bit before it was stored without the head on for 45 odd years.

So far I have torn down the "red engine" and gotten it ready to go to the machine shop. As soon as the "blue engine" is ready they will both go to get tanked, magged, and blasted. The heads (I will be posting pics of them tomorrow after work) will get the same treatment but also get checked to see what they flow. Both heads have been fully ported and big valves installed.

Here is the link to all the pictures (there are a lot!), they loaded backwards off my phone so start out on page #5 and just work your way up to page #1.

I will post up more tomorrow night.

Amazing find!

I wonder if the Porsche installation had the motor up front or out back?

It was bolted up to a Porsche trans via a custom adapter plate and had a 8" VW clutch and had 3 mounts (one on the pass side that doubled as a fuel pump block off, one off the power steering mount and one on the bottom of the adapter plate) so I'm thinking that it was rear mounted. I would have loved to see it in action. I have heard stories about rear mounted slants in Porsches for SCCA racing.

Found a few color pics of the rail and the new issue of Hot Rod Deluxe has a nice clear pic of the Hilborn unit too!

Interesting setup. Like a direct injection/TBI hybrid. Full time flow but directly at the intake port.

Would love to hear more about Porsches with slant sixes sticking out the back, I wonder if any pictures are around? It seems like this would not be an improvement withe the added weight on the back and plumbing in a radiator, but racers do crazy things. Congrats onthe hilborn and other goodies, neat stuff.
