Hey all

Rebuilt my 170, and I'm working on getting it started right now.

Wondering if anyone with a 60 slant six engine has snapped a good picture of their timing chain cover?

Mine is supposed to be stamped with timing marks, and it doesn't have any. I know my engine has been rebuilt - maybe the original timing chain cover got scrapped.

Would like to see an image of a timing chain cover with the marks if anyone has one?

The timing marks are on a bolt on tab located on the drivers side.

He's got a '60, though, not a '61-'65. The '60 timing marks were stamped into the cover itself.

I just tore down a 1960 170 and found that the timing tab on the cover was different from any other I've ever seen. There is a tiny ear about 1/4" wide that is spot welded near the upper center of the cover. The marks are there, but extremely difficult to see. The bolt-on tab that Fopar refers to is definitely the way to go.

I don't quite agree. The '61-'65 timing tab is a damn pain, because it's on the other side of the engine from the distributor. I like the '66/'67-up setup with the timing tab welded to the timing cover on the distributor side of the engine. Makes it much easier to adjust the timing without having to dance back and forth from side to side of the engine bay.

But whatever you do, you'll have to have a timing mark that's accurate for the indicator you use. '60 is different from '61-'62 is different from '63-'65 is different from '66 is different from the various '67-ups.

Found those marks. JEEZ! They are so faint. Had to strip paint off the cover to see them and only with a flashlight held at the right angle are they more visible.

It's funny. The FSM for '60 shows a black & white picture of the front of the engine and the timing chain cover with a nice gauge-shaped, very obvious 'stamping' with raised timing marks inside the gauge.

It's not the first time I've noticed a significant variance from what the FSM for '60 depicts and what they actually produced.

My cover has got a large diagonal marking extruding across the face of it, with a 'leg' that curves over the top of the damper portion of the cover. The markings are above the curved leg, right as it splits off. Are other people's '60's the same as this?
