So I'm in the process of swapping a 170 for 225. The 170 is the original engine from a 1963 Valiant. The donor engine is at least a 1972 225. Upon trying to take off the harmonic balancer from the 225, it came apart. I thought I would just use the one off of the 170. The timing marks on the 170 cover are on the side, down low. The timing marks on the 225 are on the top. This will make my use of timing marks useless. I didn't take out the EI distributor from the 225, so the timing should be at least close enough to get it started, and running. I did hear the enigine run before I bought it, and did a compression check as well. I never got to drive it under load, but I know it runs. What are my options for timing? Do I need to change timing chain covers, or can I just buy a new, or aftermarket HB for the later 225? |

The timing tab with the marks on it on the early 170 motor is bolted on through one of the cover bolts. If you remove said bolt you can move the tab over to the other motor. This won't work in reverse because the later cover had the tab spot welded on Random note: The crank snout is bigger on the later crank. You'll need a spacer ring in it so the torque converter snout is positioned where it should be. |
