The fan don't fit......

Well it does if I only want 1/8" clearance.

Finally decided to install the Mercedes fan & clutch assembly.

Took the stock 4 blade off (somewhat of a pain without removing the radiator) and tried to get the Mercedes fan installed.

First thing I found was that the radiator is in the way because you can't slip the fan over water pump spigot.

Then because it looked really tight, I decided to see how much clearance there was before removing the radiator (good thing I did).

I put the fan clutch against the radiator, and found that there was only 1/8" between the mount of the clutch and the front of the water pump pulley.

So this project is on hold until I can get more clearance (which might be possible)

Also you should cut down the water pump spigot from .4" to .2-.25"

If I'm lucky, I'm hoping all the tolerances have worked against me.

There's a little slop in all the bolted connections, and there's lots of bolted connections:

1. Engine mount bracket to engine.
2. Engine mount to engine mount bracket.
3. K-frame to engine mount.

If all those have worked against me, I might be able to gain 1/16" for each, or 3/16".

Or even elongate some of the holes.

Then there the big one:
4 . K-frame to body.

Don't know how much slop is here, but I think it's possible it's more than 1/16"

So I might be able to get 3/8" (maybe slightly more) clearance.

Also if anybody is wondering, the Mercedes fan clutch is 60mm high......

There are many different Mercedes fans and fan clutches.

Is there any way to maneuver in the rad and mount the side tabs on the rad on the front of the core support instead of the engine side? It looks doable on my '62 B-body (with a bit of trimming on the bottom of the tabs) and would gain about 3/8-1/2" of fan clearance.

It's the 77 280 fan. (got it from ValiantBoyWonder, reply 4 http://www.slantsix.org/forum/viewtopic ... clutch+fan)

The clutch looks like the picture I found on rockauto, and the dimensions seem correct. So I assume it's the correct Mercedes fan.

I searched and found a post here that measured 2 1/2" from water pump to radiator with their 64 dart, which is about what I'm getting too.

2 1/2" - 60mm is just about 1/8"..........

I've seen 3 1'2" for later models, and think I've seen 2.75" as a measurement somewhere (can't find that one).

It's an old style big top tank radiator.

So it doesn't look like it's possible to slide in front because of the top tank.

But it does look like the radiator can be slid forward about 1/4" between the mounting side rails (the top tank would then be hitting the top frame cross-piece) by desoldering and resoldering the side mounts.

Ok, no more assumptions.....

I looked up the part numbers of the fan clutch and the fan blade and they're the correct Mercedes part numbers.

fan blade
108 205 02 06

fan clutch
behr 3649

Wait 'til you put a two-row aluminum radiator in there with 1" tubes. In '64 Valiants, it gets pretty tight up front.

Thoughts......

I tried running a big 16" fan for about 5 years but, that was not as efficient as two 10" fans and clearance is no problem then. When I ran a 16" fan I just cut the snout off the water pump and gained another 3/16" and then ran button head allen bolts on pulley. The 16" fan was very low profile only 3.2" deep. The top half of the fan blew hot air, the bottom have just blew cold air.

The two tens keep things much cooler, run less often and offset on either side of the water pump pulley.

Um…okeh, I'll try again:

There. Are. Many. Different. Mercedes. Fans. And fan. Clutches.

That's important because it means if the one you're using doesn't fit, there are lots of others you can try. With different dimensions. There is no such thing as "the correct Mercedes part numbers" for a Valiant. Get it now?

If the tank is causing clearance issues for install then just pull the radiator. It takes less time to pull a slant radiator than this discussion took.

Sooooo, whatcha trying to say there Dan?
 :P

It won't cool very well without a radiator......

Although the radiator will have to be removed to install, it's a running clearance problem.

1/8" isn't enough to be sure that the fan won't hit the radiator.

I've gone thru the Hayden catalog because it has dimensions on their fan clutches and couldn't find anything thin enough that bolts on.

You have a clutch right? I had to use a spacer just for between the fan and waterpump for my 70 Dart. (no clutch) Even then it wasn't exactly right and we had to cut it to have the right clearance. If you really want that fan it sounds like getting rid of the clutch is always an option. Maybe a bad one, but it's there.

Maybe you could look for a thinner fan?
And haha yes, removing the radiator when installing the fan make everything so much easier. I thought that was obvious.

You are right to be concerned about the clearance. I had about 1/8" and then had to stop quick and the engine slid forward enough for the fan to chew up the radiator. A half inch seems like enough if you can get it by making those little changes. Early A bodies are really tight in this area.
