Recommendation for antifreeze?

Post subject:  Recommendation for antifreeze?
It is time to put antifreeze back in. Any recommendation for brands or types. Either praise or cautionary tales are sought. Engine is normal cast slant, but radiator is aluminum. I will likely leave this is next Summer.

Any good brand will do in general; I kind like Prestone, but that is just an "I am used to this stuff" kind of deal. But, with the AL radiator, I would be using Zerex G-05 with the different inhibitor package in it that is made to help AL engine parts.

Any AL part is subject to internal corrosion that you don't get with a brass radiator. With a brass rad and iron blcok, the iron becomes the sacrificial element in the electrolytic action that ALWAYS occurs with the electric currents flowing around. With the thickness of the engine castings, this is not much of an issue.

When you go to an AL radiator and an iron engine (or any AL engine part with iron block for that matter), the AL becomes the sacrifical element and corrodes. (Ever notice that you get more corrosion around bolts into the aluminum housing of the water pump? That is the reason.) With the intentional thinness of the AL rad, corrosion becomes a significant problem now.

So you should run the best A/F corrosion package intended for AL parts in the system. AND, you should run it all year 'round. (If you drag race your car, they may not allow A/F in the colling system in case it 'takes a dump' on the line.)

I tried other brands that were green, but they didn't keep the radiator as shinny/clean inside as Prestone yellow gallon jug does......I think Prestone does a better job overall. If you want to save a few bucks, by it at WallMart. It is usually $6.00 off from list per gallon. I just got some a week ago to put in my engine.

I would recomend a GO-5 antifreeze Both Ford and Mopar use it ( fords is gold colored and mopars is orange ) it's a 5 year antifreeze. I just changed the gold coolant in my wifes 07 focus the cooling system was very clean no corosion at all. This coolant had about 300,000 miles on it. You can by it from mopar, Ford, also Zerex makes it most NAPA stores should have it in Zerex. I was impressed with it.

I also have always had good luck with Prestone brand ethylene glycol (standard green) radiatopr fluid. However, I have also had no problems when i have had to use other brands, even generic gas station or grocery store brands. I have successfully used the green fluid in a 50/50 water to fluid mix in climates from -30 Fahrenheit in winter in Alaska to 120 Fahrenheit in summer in Utah. No problems, ever, so long as the rest of the cooling system was in good condition.

Our older cars don't need Zerex G-05 antifreeze unless someone has swapped in an aluminum radiator.

I use Evan's Coolant. I'm quite pleased with it.
