hi sages- has anybody here purchased recently a rebuild kit(springs, washers, shims, etc) for the above shifter. expect to be taking it out soon and want to rebuild it. it works and gets all the gears but all the left and right spring action is gone. figuring the springs in it rusted out and disappeared. doubt if dealer has any of these. does the old hurst company still manufacture these parts? shyster mechanic wanted to soak me $100 to rebuild it. sent that proposal south. what is good source for these kits(passon, brewers, etc) ? dont want to go to a clip joint. bet the doctor and the DI have done this job. hope they might offer me a kit from their junk pile . cant find junkyards with parts this old anymore. what we need is a place like darnells junkyard. you do remember will darnell dont you? thanks tons for help bob f |

I have rebuilt a few of these so far, and only had to order a couple of parts...it takes about an hour to clean a gross mechanism in the parts tank, then reassemble with fresh grease, assuming you took notes and are working from the exploded diagram to put it back together...you will also need some good strength or leverage when fitting it all back together, getting that spring compressed is tricky. |

thank you doctor dougmo and di- looked upthat link you gave me doctor and went through the details. it appears there are only two springs in the shifter unit. which one is the gate spring you refer to? is it an actual coiled spring or is it a bent piece of spring steel? also a common shifter that went in many cars from hurst was the competition plus 4 speed. is that the same one that a bodies and f bodies used in the 70s? having a hard time identifying the model which was used in the feather duster and the f bodies. only saw two models in those cars- in one you would press left from neutral against a light spring and then a heavier spring and then straightupto get reverse. in the other you would do the same to get reverse but after you first lifted the stick up by the knob. the feather has the former and the latter was in my 77 aspen wagon. need your guidance. thanks tons bob f |

All the late cars had the hurst shifter stock, that doesn't mean someone can't retrofit anything in there as long as it worked...the old inland shifters with the locking collar on the stick were typical in the mid/late 60's but got replaced in most applications by the hurst unit....The last A-833OD I took out of a junkyard had the stick engraved with "hurst" on the sides it was an F-body station wagon unit from 1977, instead of being the plain chrome shift lever typically seen in the 1975-1976 A-bodies. |

hi DI- interesting points. my 76 feather with the od has no spring action left or right in neutral which it formerly did. notice from the diagram the doctors link gave me there are 2 coil springs, a long and a short in the shifter unit. not sure which works the neutral left to 1st and which works the neutral hard left to reverse. 77 aspen also od had a hurst shifter but it was not just a push left for 1st and reverse. you had to pull the stick up from neutral for reverse. also had an 80 volare wagon with a factory 3speed floorshift which looked just like a hurst with a standard 4 position h pattern. that one never crapped out. uncle moe said what the hell do you want ,that duster is almost 40-junk it. my feelings were hurt. think i should order the 2 springs. which spring is the gate spring as dougmo calls it. bet you and the doctor wouldnt tell me to junk the feather. thanks for any further insight. bob f |
