| Post subject: | Valiant starts then shuts off |
Hey guys I'm stuck in a parking lot behind a donut shop, my valiant starts and then shuts off as soon as I let go of the gas pedal. What could be the problem. Bad fuel pump? |

Are you saying it will idle or run after you release ignition key from start while feathering the gas, or as soon as the key returns to run position the engine stops? |

yes exactly, as soon as I cut the gas the engine turns off with in 3 sec

Most likely a carburetor problem... like a needle valve stuck partially open (flooding) or a clogged idle circuit. (to lean at idle) Pull the air cleaner and look into the carb right after shut-off to see if raw gas is pouring into the intake manifold. If not flooding... Pull-out the idle air mixture screw and spray some carb cleaner thru the open hole, reinstall the screw and see if that unplugs the clog. (Tip: First turn the screw in and count the turns until it seats, then unscrew to remove. Clean passage and reinstall the needle screw, to it's original position) DD |

Thanks, I also think its the air cleaner, I was messing around with the mixture screw the other day when I installed a new air cleaner. So maybe it has to do with thatPull the air cleaner and look into the carb right after shut-off to see if raw gas is pouring into the intake manifold. If not flooding... Clean passage and reinstall the needle screw, to it's original position) DD by the way I drove home from the parking lot where I was stranded having to start the car again everytime I stopped |

You say it will run but not idle, right?Why would you think it was the air cleaner? You did say you messed with the "idle-mixture", right?. I doubt it is the air cleaner. Did it do this right away? Maybe the idle screw loosened up after running it. I would try to reset the idle mixture screw as mentioned above. Also mentioned above, you have to feather the gas to keep it running. Might be a choke problem. |

What year of Valiant? Also it could be as simple as the carb base bolts or manifold bolts loosening up or a vacuum hose broken or off and allowing a significant vacuum leak; that will kill engine idle every time. Check the carb after shut off for fuel pouring into the throat as Dr Dodge suggested to check for excess fuel, and also pull a couple of spark plugs and look for flat black carbon coloration on the plugs. If there is not excess gas in the carb throat and the plugs look normal, then suspect a big vacuum leak. The later Valiants had numerous vacuum hoses and working around the air cleaner area could have loosened one up. |
