I believe the first year and more 170's were Red. Try to find pics of the restored 1960 XNR for a really nice representation. |

I googled the XNR and noticed a couple things. The alternator is shifted to the middle, cool. And the dual exhaust uses flex pipe for the down tubes, interesting. Oh and it is red. |

Correct....Dealer installed or you installed it yourself. Too bad color pics are not available, at least to my knowledge, but some early magazines that I have detail the hyper pack installation on a 1960 Valiant belonging to Briggs Cunningham.

Did all hyper packs have the alternates moved inboard? I've seen a few others pictured on the net like that, what would be the benefit? |

Shorter fan belt, keeping the engine from throwing the belt at 6000+ rpm...it doesn't take much, a wobble in the alternator pulley would lunch your charging and cooling in one fraction of a second....been there and done that, will be relocating my alt on the next go through since my cars don' t have power steering.

I too have derailed belts at the 6000 rpm range while in second gear; not a good thing to take place out on the open road to suddenly loose power steering, and get a boiling tea kettle in less than a quarter of a mile. This has happened several times to me during sea trials after a tuning session. I did find that power steering pump was cocked off of square a wee bit which seamed to be the cause of belt problems. I had to shim power steering bracket to get it true with crank pulley which took a bit of fiddling around to get it right. I suspect previous owner had welded PS bracket during Budweiser Engineering session... |

60 had the alternator on left. Moved soon afterward, not sure when. EARLY heads don't have the bolt boss to mount the alt bracket on the right. |
