After the car was idle for about a month, the transmission howled in reverse for about 20 seconds. The sound would go away immediately upon putting it in park, neutral or drive, and then start howling again when pulled back in reverse. It did this twice for about 10 seconds each time, and then was fine.

This is how the trans behaved the very first time I moved the car with the new automatic in it. I then drove it about 4 thousand miles over the Spring and Summer with completely normal behavior the entire time. I let it sit for a month when the exhaust leak forced me to shut it down until I had time to repair it, which I did yesterday.

AFter the initial howling event, it was back to completely normal sound and function. Can anyone suggest a possible cause of this. The howl is pretty loud. Is there something draining back down when it sits that needs to get pumped back up? What circuit is only used in reverse? I know nothing about how automatic transmissions work. Do think this does damage that will ultimately cause something to fail?

Thanks. Sam

It was fine today. It is a mystery. I hope someone will have an idea what is leaking down when sitting for awhile.

Thanks anyway.

Sam
