Post subject:  clicking/tapping noise.

Recently noticed a clicking or tapping noise whilst driving, it's easier to hear. increases and decreases with RPM, isn't as noticeable at idle, or may not be ccuring I can't tell.

the sound is metallic, my instinct tells me it is to do with the valves.

In terms of engine changes I put in a new starter motor which I didn't think would change anything. Using a BP type higher octane fuel, I didn't want to use the E10 product.

Should I be concerned or is this normal? Kind of reminds me when we used to put a playing card in the spokes of our pushbikes when we were kids.

Cheeres

Use a small hose or tubing to ear, place on valve cover up & down its length listening for your noise.

Or, pull valve cover for a listen and look see. Could be simple as lash adjustment backing off on one rocker caused by weak locking, cam lobe erosion, or bent push rod cause by high rpm or stuck valve stem, or problem not coming from top of head.

It could also be a small exhaust leak.

So is the tapping/clicking gone? Hope so. If not, one other possibility is the fule pump; thay can get pretty loud. Easy to figure out: putting a long wood rod or screwdriver on the pump and to your ear will show it to be really loud in that spot.
