Post subject:  Intake/ Exhaust Manifold Question
This is on a 1965 Dodge Dart 170 With Slant 6
I had an exhaust leak , and went looking for it.
I found it where the two manifolds bolt together, with three bolts, ( exhaust/ intake )
It was leaking quite a bit. So I pulled the two manifolds ,
And found that one of the long bolts that hold the two manifolds
Together had broken smooth off in the exhaust manifold,
( the one behind the carburetor )
I rebuild the whole set up , but my question is , the bolt behind the carburetor
That Goes thru the intake manifold , has some clearance around it ,on the underside,
Creating what would be an intake manifold leak, that no one would see ,is there suppost to be
Some sealant , or something sealing around the bolt.

Hello and welcome! The gap you describe would actually create a large exhaust manifold leak, not intake. There is suppsed to be a thin metal gasket that goes between the manifolds but it sounds like your exhaust manifold has warped over the years and developed a "smile" (the center hangs lower than the two ends).

My advice is find a different exhaust manifold, or switch to Dutra dual exhaust manifolds, or (cheapest option) try a Remflex gasket between the manifolds:

1. Might be able to fix it up by doubling up the thin shim steel gaskets that normally go in that space, and using high temp RTV between and above/below each gasket. Remflex as above might be good too.
2. Also, watch the alignment of the tops of the intake and exhaust manifolds on the heads and make sure that the the exhaust does not sag below the instake.
3. Tighten the mainfold bolts before the intake-to-exhaust bolts.
4. Don't over tighten the 2 intake-to-exhaust bolts on the outside or that will tend to open up the inner gap.

Reed had it right, go with remflex, it will seal the leak unless the gap is like huge...these are thick, and I mean thick, gaskets. Don't crank it down too much, just crush it until the leak is sealed. You can try it, if it still leaks a bit, then torque it down until the leak stops, no more.

Anyone with a slant six should use Remflex gaskets for exhaust/intake. They simply take the guesswork out of the equation. They can tolerate a reasonable amount of misalignment of the manifolds against/to the block, and with each other at the heat riser and still not leak. Why go further? I also use Remflex on the exhaust manifold to downpipe flanges (dutra duals) very easy no issue seal, just bolt on the pipe(s) and you're done, no leaks!

They're not cheap, but no headaches with ticking exhaust leaks. Totally worth the price. I'm thankful a vendor makes such a time saver for the venerable slant six.
