Been a bit slow on this assembly; the machine shop was took a week longer than they said. I wanted to ask: Do youse guys use any Copper-Kote on the stock type steel shim head gaskets? We have jacked the CR just a little over stock with .030 off the head and a .040 overbore, but nothing serious on CR. The original factory gasket had no sealer. Tnx in advance for any info. |

Why not use a more dependable and easily available FelPro or other composite gasket? I have never actually used a stock type shim steel one... Lou |

Uuuh, to be original and to not have the minor CR loss. The old steel shim was good after 52 years, the deck is straight and the head has been milled. (Heck, I was even thinkig of Copper-Koting the old shim gasket!) So back to the original q...... |

Spray both sides with silver paint, let it get tacky, put it together. |

I've done that a few decades in the past...... had forgotten that one. LOL Just finally had the right thought..... consult the FSM. Sho nuff: "Coat gasket with sealer and place gasket on block". Duh, shoulda looked there 1st.... |

I used the shim type head gasket on one of my builds and coated it with Hylomar and it worked fine. As long as everything is straight! |

Tnx; head is fresh milled and block is flat. The 52 year old shim gasket that came off had no leaks. So we will coat it! |

Just be sure that the blocked, front & middle coolant passage area have not rotted thru... DD |

If you mean on the old head gasket... we are not going to reuse it. I may have not made that clear; it was just a temptation. Those holes were indeed rotted open on the old gasket from 1962.... but it did not matter as the block was so scaled up that the holes were still blocked in the block... along with most of one of the rear holes! Thanks very much for the head's up. |
