On the D150 I always removed the hood to allow clearance across the radiator support when pulling the motor. Can I pull the motor on a A body (68 barracuda) with the hood on, but up? I have the radiator out, water pump, head and manifolds off,, Thanks[/quote] |

We just pulled and reinstalled the /6 in out '62 Dart B body, and we pulled the hood. Not sure the hood on your car goes up at any steeper angle. You can only try, but it would be a pain to relower it to get the hood off if it does not work. |

You will need to pull the hood...its easier before the engine is hanging off a chain. |

'68 isn't any different than the late A-bodies...it's easier to with the hood off. With the hood on: prep everything to come apart easy without having to crawl around, pull the radiator to allow the motor to move forward more, you will also be pulling the fan/pulleys and alternator...Chock the front wheels, jack the back of the car up as high as you can get it and put jack stands under the rear axle or frame which ever works best...if you go too high the front of the cowl may contact the ground and scratch things up.... you will need a bracket or short chain between the two bolts on top of the head, do not leave much room for it to bow...use the hook on your cherry picker directly/rebolt it so you only have a couple links showing...put some old towels or cloth over the front of the radiator support so you don't scratch that up... The back of the picker arm will be tight against the hood, and may contact it as you ease the engine out bit by bit, if being a little difficult with a tranny attached you may need someone to push the hood up a bit more as the hinges allow to get that last inch....and to catch the tail of the block or transmission so it doesn't scratch up things on the way out.... It's a little more fun putting it back in this way with a lot of short push/pull and prying, so it's just easier to scribe the hinges and pull the hood for the install. |

Hook the chain short and don't screw with the hood. |

I have never pulled the hood on any motor I've puled whether a big block, LA or slant. Oh and always left the transmissions install. Usually the only help I've had is the wife helping out where she could. |

Leaving the hood on only works if you have an engine crane type lift. Using an A-frame or a tree branch the hood will definitely be in the way. |

Why would anyone want to leave the hood on? Just because of adjusting it? I have had the motor in and out of my car 4 times in 3 years and I pulled the hood every time. only takes about 60 second to pull it and about 5 minute to install it and adjust it. It ain't rocket science if I can do it. Plus it just gives you more room to work on all that stuff at the firewall ...etc. Rick |

I had the motor out of the red car 50 times. I never pulled the hood. Best I did was 30 minutes motor out and on the stand. |
