Post subject:  64 Dart /6 904 TorqueFlight

Hello,
I have a 64 Dart with a rebuilt slant six where most parts were bought from Clifford Performance. We're having a problem with the 904 transmission with the new engine set up. I'm being told that the kickdown cable and linkage from the carb and the transmission won't work with my set up allowing me to keep the push button transmission. I'm not a car guy so I don't understand why it won't work. I guess my kickdown cable is internal and the linkage is mechanical and won't work together. Can anyone offer any advice about how to keep my push button capabilities with my upgraded engine?

Thanks,

Ralph

Become a Car Guy! Buy a Factory Service Manual. 64' has a unique throttle system that you may need to switch to a cable. More info. on your set-up will produce more answers and help! Happy New Year! and Welcome to the Forum!

If the 64 set-up is like the 65 for a slant with 904, it is all rod actuated - throttle and kickdown. The FSM should show how it's all set up.

As has been mentioned, the 1964 throttle kickdown is actuated by a rod that is operated of the throttle rod. The kickdown rod has nothing to do with the pushbutton shifting mechanism.

Replacing your carburetor with a non-stock setup from Clifford almost certainly required switching your throttle linkage from the factory original rod-style linkage to either an aftermarket or later factory style cable kickdown linkage. Abandoning the factory rod-style throttle linkage rendered the factory kickdown linkage inoperable. You will need to convert to a Lokar cable-style kickdown linkage. Universal 904 kickdown cable systems are available on eBay for under $30. The kickdown linkage has nothing to do wth the pushbutton shifting.

Whoever is telling you that you have to switch to a non-pushbutton shifter is wrong. Also, it is unfortunate that you spent your money at Clifford. Much better parts are available much cheaper from many other vendors. I strongly encourage you to use the search button on this board to research all of your upgrade options before listening to anyone from Clifford. I also encourage you to find a mechanic who knows what they are talking about before you pay anyone else to work on your car.
