| Post subject: | engine stops after a few seconds |
Hello, I am from Germany, so please excuse my bad english. I give my best. I have the following problem and i need a little bit help to solve it: The engine starts well. It run only for a few seconds (around 10 seconds). Then the engine stops. This behaviour can be repeate every times. Until now i check the following: 1. I clean the carb (several times) and install new gasket 2. I check the fuel pessure. it's ok. 3. I check the pressure loss of the engine. Seems ok and normal. 4. with motor starter the engine runs longer but also not stable. After this, nothing changed. The engine stops after a few seconds with the exact same behavior. The car was a Plymouth baracuda from 1966 (225 cui). any more to the symtom: When i accelerate, the rotaion speed increase but the engine immediate stops. To the car i must say following: I don't know the history of the car. i became the car in this condition. I hope you can give me some ideas what can be the reason for this. Many thanks Joachim |

Sounds like the carburetor choke is not working or needs adjustment. DD |

or a bad ballast resistor. Try putting a jumper wire across the ballast resistor temporaraly to test. If it stays running replace it. There are some who grew up in the United States who do no better than you, so no problem with your " bad english". Welcome to the family! |

No. Bad ballast resistors do not allow the engine to run for 10 seconds. With a bad ballast resistor, the engine fires but quits as soon as the key is released from "start" to "run".

The choke flap closing is only the beginning of the engine choking & warm-up process... Once the engine starts, the choke pull-off diaphragm should partially open the choke flap... but not too much to cause a lean condition & stalling. If the choke pull-off opens to flap too much, the engine will start.. then quickly stall-out. Remove the air cleaner and watch the choke flap action on start-up. Hold the flap 3/4 closed or adjust to that position, to see if that prevents an engine start-up & stall-out. DD |

Good idea with the choke and resistor. I fixed the choke and bypassed the resistor. Result: no changing. I've made two short videos for you to demonstrate the behavior. Here are the links: http://youtu.be/beWi_1bka6M http://youtu.be/Fct8iEfSlPk Thinks that make me thouthful: 1. Resistor after a few seconds very hot. Resistor has 1.2 ohm. Normal ? 2. a little bit white smoke (can see on the video) Normal ? I think the resistor is definitly not the reason. But the engine hat not enough or incorrect gas mixture. The vaccum memrane on the carb opens a little bit when the engine works for a moment with start fluid. So there seems enough underpressure in the intake manifold. (Maybe) Thanks for the ideas at this point. Joachim |

Have you checked the valve lash adjustment? DD |
