does this item fail a lot on slant hi per engines? would a custom steel one solve the issue if there is one?

Are you talking about the retainer for the top half of the rear seal? :?

The front seal is in the timing cover. :shock:

The only failure is if you put the lip on the wrong side and don't follow Doc's article on setting it up correctly.

No I don't think so - as I don't believe there is any issue with this part.

Its not load bearing Part - Just holds half of the seal in place.
