I have a friend who is trying to change out power steering for manual on an automatic column shift 65 Dart. It uses the old style cable linkage hooked on the steering column since the pushbuttons were dropped the previous year. He lives in another state and I have not seen the car and I am unfamiliar with the column operated cable shift mechanisim so I cant be of any help to him. He tells me that this particular configuration was used only one year 1965. He wants to know if the cables should be disconnected at the column or if it must be done at the transmission? What is the best/easiest way to change out the shaft? He wants to remove the shorter steering shaft and replace it with the longer one for the manual box. He has a manual box and the longer shaft but is stuck on how to best disassemble it without damaging it so it may still be used. Any help on this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Ron |

Hi Ron, I have disconnected the cables at the column on a 65 before. I have no other experience with this kind of swap. I can say that after running PS on my 64 Valiant and always having been a manual steering guy, I will avoid the stock PS on all future builds. Best, Lou |

Ron I am 99% sure that you can change the shaft without removing the column from the car. Remove the steering wheel and TS switch,snap ring and the top bearing may come out with the shaft. At the box remove the coupler completely from shaft(Power and Manual are different size splines)The lower plastic seal/bushing clean as much rust off the shaft so it will slide thru the bushing.Thats if any bushing is even there. You may have to use vise grips and tap with a hammer to get it started Plenty of lube on the shaft to free it from the bushing.Slide the shaft out from inside the car. |
