Wow, haven't seen them called globes in a while.
What Ed posted is what you need.
And I can personally vouch that the LED replacements for instrument lights are crap.
I'll be going back to the 57's.

There are actually (finally) beginning to be some good LED bulbs on the market. Mostly for the wedge-type bulbs (158, 194, etc.) used starting in '66, but if you have a '65 or earlier car it's easy to swap in the '66-up dashboard bulb holders to take the wedge-base bulbs. But if you don't want to mess with it, you can still get #58 bulbs. A Sylvania #3893 also fits and works well. |

A friend used led's in his tail lights and found his 'after market' cruise control did not function. Presumeably because led's are digital devices (original globes are analogue) they send a turn-off signal to the computer in the cruise control. |

Be especially careful when replacing exterior bulbs. The first LED retrofits that actually work safely have just recently become available (details in another thread I'll post soon) but most of what's available on the market is a giant mountain of unsafe junk.

I for one have begun to dislike the recent influx of factory LED tail lights as they are just two damn bright up close in traffic and LED brake lights are as bad as the old flash bulbs leaving a cluster of dark spots at times. Never mind the recent super bright fast flashing blue light the cops are using now that make going around said ticket writing cop on the side of the road very difficult to see in the travel lane. The damn things are blinding for old eyes, I won’t belabor the recent influx of crappie blue hued poorly aimed scattered blast of photons from aftermarket headlights greeting one head-on, or in rearview mirror. Oh my big bugaboo; invisible dinky directional lights integral with headlight assembly. Some manufactures deactivate head light when directional signal is operating; a good idea in my book. |

I tried some cheaper LED's and they were indeed crap. but then I tried superbrightleds and they are the bees knees. THe cheap ones are dull and the light is diffuse or "fuzzy", the good ones from SuperBright LED's provide wonderful lighting for my cluster, and it's crisp light if that means anything, not hazy or diffuse. I chose green and it looks awesome in my '67 cluster. brian |

There's nothing such as "crisp" light -- it doesn't mean anything; you might as well say "chewy" or "soggy" or "smelly" light. More importantly: do not make the common error of thinking a "super bright" instrument cluster is a good thing. Yeah, it looks nifty, but it also does a real job on your nighttime visual acuity. You want the instrument cluster lit just brightly enough that you can read the gauges without squinting or staring -- no brighter. Most importantly: do not use any of the LEDs you find at Super Bright LEDs or any of the other vendors to replace any of your car's exterior lights. They're not effective, safe, or legal. |
