Here are side by side pics of Felpro (top) and Endurotec (bottom) head gaskets:

http://s785.photobucket.com/user/67dart ... sort=3&o=0

First, I noticed that they both have orange sealant lines, but on opposite sides. Also the Endurotec has more orange lines than Felpro.

Second, Endurotec has larger steel rings.

Third, Endurotec seems beefier to me, I don't have a micrometer to see if it's thicker, but it feels heavier to me.

Finally, Endurotec has at least some sealant between the rings on both sides, while Felpro has this only on one side.

Any other features I'm missing? Is there empirical knowledge that Endurotec is better than Felpro composite?

FYI,

Brian

Permaseal gaskets were the ducks guts but in the world we live in I believe they became Endurotec no doubt via some convoluted corporate restructure? Don't quote me on that, but have heard this from a few sources...anyways,plenty of rebuilders use them and seem to have a good rep...that being said there's been plenty of tough street V8s built with Fel Pro with great results. I used a felpro rear seal on a slant, very happy. I know this doesn't really answer your question, but I don't think you can go wrong either way. That being said, if one has a rope rear seal and the other a 2 piece neoprene job,I'd go for the kit with the neoprene. Last kit I got had a rope seal and it wasn't even close to the rope seals of old. If it's just the head gasket you need to decide on,I'd probably go the Endurotec...but for a streeter you can't make a wrong choice in my book.

Where did you get the endurotec from? That does look like the big bore permaseal gasket we group ordered some time back..

I did the last group buy on the Permaseal, big bore gaskets. When they came they were the Enduotec. I e-mailed Mark with Aussie Speed and he told me that the Permaseal and Endurotec come off of the same assembly line, just with different labeling. At least for the big bore gasket.

I bought these from Precision International, probably should have done a group buy with the outrageous shipping. If there's a next time, I'll ask the boards for any takers on a group buy.

Does the larger bore change my compression calculations much?

Oh ok, I thought you found an onshore source for them.

It will change it some, but I don't remember how much. Plug in your numbers to a CR calculator like Wallace or similar.

Did you need the big bore gasket for bore size?

No, mine isn't bored, so I don't need it for bore size. Should I use the smaller diameter for any reason?

Well, The Permaseal/ Endurotec seems to be the premium gasket for us who race and are using a big bore / and or higher CR up to about 11 1/2 or 12 to 1 CR. If you don't have high CR or big bore then I would probably just use the Felpro and save the Endurotec for a big bore build.

but the Endurotec (minus shipping) was only $15 US...if it has a good reputation, I might as well use it.

If you got the big bore for $15 then that was a great price. I think the last ones I got were $32 and that was buying 20. I think shipping was $220 so that made them @ $42 each. Plus I had to send them to people again once I received them.

Rick

PS Maybe someone want to do another group buy while the prices are down?

IF the Endurotec is a big bore gasket I'd probably lean towards Fel pro in that case simply because the larger bore gasket may give a small area to inhibit good flame travel and cause some detonation....but it's not a huge deal I guess

That's a completely moot point on a stock or a 9:1 build and the bigger bore helps when bore/core shift occured and the end user can't pick and choose from several heads to get the chamber perfectly centered right over the bore (junkyards are not getting as many slant vehicles any more), possibly causing an issue with the fire ring...that being said the old Permaseal gasket was awesome at sealing up the bores in high compression builds (exceeds victor reinz which holds good up to about 12:1 SCR), and was not prone to head gasket failures on slants being built above the 10:1 SCR range...(Which I've had a few using Fel-pro on hi-po builds)....

That's why I said "it's not a huge deal"....mind you, if a stock size gasket can handle a .060" over bore and still seal OK the must be plenty of give and take to allow for the issues of core shift and factory tolerances?
