Post subject:  Oil filter examination after rebuild

Hi all,
I recently rebuilt my engine (my first rebuild) and after running in the cam etc (about 30mins of running) I dumped the oil and opened up the oil filter. Inside the filter I found a bit of non-metallic crud, a few flecks/flakes of bearing material and if I drag a magnet over the media a little bit of metal grit from each filter pleat. Frankly a bit more bearing material and metal grit than I was hoping to find, I realise that there is always going to be a bit of gunk from the break-in and the I guess the bearing material is probably just from no. 3 thrust face or the front of no. 1 cam bearing or something, I guess I am wondering what other people find in their oil after a rebuild and what to look out for?
Thanks

The first "start-up" filter gets all the "sweep" material...
The second filter inspection will tell you more about what is really going-on inside the engine.

I am a big advocate of cutting open oil filters. It can catch a serious engine problem before it's too late. That being said Doug is right to not worry too much about the first one. After you drive it a while change the filter again and post what you find. Most times you should see little or no shiny bearing material or black iron residue. If I see anything in the filter I drop a magnet into the drain oil to see if anything sticks.
