Post subject:  Rocker Arm End play Lash
Hello, I would like to know what a good rocker arm endplay lash setting would be for a racing engine.

I am attempting to set up my engine with 1.6 Roller Rockers that I bought From Mike a few years back.

At this point I dont know it they will work but I would like to try them to see :D
They came with a bunch of shims etc. And the set was originally set up for a head that thad the Rocker Pedestals milled flat. I am trying to install them on a head with the stock type pedestals still intact. I dont want them to be too tight for when the engine gets hot.

This is NOT a Valve Lash Setting question... rather the endplay or side to side lash of the rockers.

Greg, the Jesel shaft mount rockers i've used in the past have zero lash side to side travel in them. The side trunion bearings have a press fit on the shaft, so they have no side to side movement in them.

I suppose I am asking about the lateral movement along the Length of the rocker shaft..

If Looking at the engine From the Front and the Shaft is on the engine... the Front to back play.. The ones I am using ride right on the Shaft no needle bearings and they do have a few thousands of wiggle because of this


I am not sure you are answering what I was asking, or i asked it poorly?

No, that's exactly what I took you to mean in your question. For yours, since they basically float on the shaft with no bearing, I have seen other aftermarket brands that can be shimmed or use a slip collar with a set screw to center the rocker tip on the valve tip. As long as you can limit the forward to rearward movement to around .020"-.030", that seems to have been acceptable on this style I have also used before.

Aren't you supposed to have the rocker arm offset just slightly from the valve tip so it tends to rotate the valve.........

No, if it doesn't center the valve tip it will wear the tips on the sides of the valves. Valve spring rotators are actually what causes the valves to rotate in most OEM setups. However, they are usually eliminated in performance or racing valve spring sets. With higher RPM's, the valves mostly rotate on their own without the need for rotators.

I would shoot for 0.010-0.020", just from my gut feeling. That will not create any clearance/binding problems. I wouldn't see any problem with 0.030" either. I would not go much below 0.010". You might limit oil outflow from the shaft/bushings at some point?

I have some shims on order to align the roller tips over the valve..

Still in the mockup phase.
