Post subject:  Same Old Quetions Just a New Face

Hello to all you Slant 6 enthusiast. I am a new member and this is my first post. I will try not to be too long with my intro before I get to my questions, but first I thought a bit of back ground might be in order. My name is Roger (aka - Dodge, yes the nik-name is from Roger-Dodger) and I live in the Boise, ID area. I have a 1964 Dodge D 100 which I have owned since 1981. Bought the truck from a friend I worked with when living in Washington State who used it as a commuting vehicle in college, prior to that it was owned by a plumber and used as his work truck, and before that it was purchased new by the Hanford Nuclear Reservation in Richland, WA. It has been a very reliable truck, I rebuilt the engine once after I purchased it, spedo had stopped working many years prior and there was no guessing how many miles were on it and the fact that sometimes it would start and other times it wouldn't. That is how it got its name "Chancy"

After years of reliable use it was getting pretty long in the tooth and time to do some work on the entire truck. The truck has a A-745 transmission with 3 on the tree and a 8 3/4 Sure Grip Limited Slip rear end with 3.91 gears. The Engine was a bone stock 225 Slant 6. I started out with the intent to just do a stock rebuild to the entire rig. I have knocked out all the dents and did all the body work and it is now in primer, I rebuilt the tranny, that was like a scavenger hunt, I am sure I found the last cluster and speedo gears on the face of the planet for this unit... Then I started on the engine, and here is where my story really starts. As I said I stated out planning to do a stock rebuild on the truck, but along the way I got side tracked. I also belong to a hot rod club here in the area, after I got into the engine I though how fun would it be to hot rod it, no one in my club has a in-line 6 cylinder (or any kind of 6 cylinder) engine, every one has built V-8's (I too have two other rigs a "59 Buick w/ 364 Nailhead and "83 El Camino w/ 350). But unfortunately I thought of this a bit to late in the build and I now I can see myself with a bit of a hybrid in the end, so I have currently stopped the engine build until I can seek a bit of advice on what's the best route to complete it and still try and hit my "new objectives".

What I have done to the engine to this point is:
1. Resurfaced the block
2. Rebore the cylinders .040 over
3. Replaced the Pistons (w/stock flat top)
4. Reconditioned connecting rods
5. Resurfaced the head, was in good shape and only took .004 off. I did mill the head on the original rebuild in 1984, believe took .010 off then.
6. Valve job on the head, replaced valves with stock replacements and new Comp Cam valve springs (1.406" O.D., 1.020" I.D.)
7. New Comp Cams Solid/mechanical lifters
8. Stock reconditioned crank
9. Installed new Comp Cam (P.N. 64-241-4)
a. 264 duration IN. & EX.
b. 220 duration @ .050" IN. & EX.
c. .440 Valve lift IN. & EX.
d. 110 degree lobe Sep. Angle
e. This cam is there choice for trucks and towing, good power in low-mid RPM's. RPM operating range of 1200 to 5000.
10. New Comp Cam Push Rods ( 9.954" length x 5/16" diameter)

This is where I am currently. I have read a lot of the messages on the Forum to understand the first question you will ask is "what do you want to do with it?" What my thoughts are that I would like to make it a respectable high"er" performance vehicle, so that it can turn some heads with my hot rod enthusiast friends, but I would also like to use it to tow a small RV travel trailer. I am installing a new IFS front end with disk breaks and will be keeping the rear drums and upgrading the electrical system to allow for electric trailer breaks. I will be keeping the current tranny and rear axel. It will not be a daily driver any longer, but used more for touring and short outings. I will not be taking it to the track, I am getting to old for that, but would like to be respectable on the street.

So my next questions would be, considering where I am at what should be my next steps. I know that the cam I have in it may not be the best choice after reading many of the messages but maybe still not the worst pick considering my use. I am wanting to put headers on and a new intake manifold. Here comes the big question I have seen asked time and time again, what intake manifold should I be looking at? I have read the messages on the forum until my eyes are bleeding and there are no straight answers to this question, depends on use and experimentation. I want to increase the torque and horse power and looking at the cam I have installed it would be best in the low to mid range RPM I am guessing. Also living in Boise, it can be cold in the mornings, but the weather here allows for enjoyable driving most of the year. So I would like to have a heated intake manifold, so that would appear to narrow the selection down to Clifford or Aussi Speed. The next question is 2 or 4 bbl. carburetor. I am tending to lean more toward a 4 bbl. mostly for the towing capability but want to make sure it is drivable, from what I have read on the Forum a 2 bbl. appears to be more street friendly.. I know that from reading the Forum Messages that Clifford is not considered by many to have good service and has had bouts of poor castings, etc. but much of what I have read was from back in 2009, is that still the case? They have some cool looking dual Webber manifolds (both progressive and synchronous.) that I would like to hear your options on. Their claims are gains of 120 hp. and 120% more torque for the 38/38 twin Webbers and 95-100% increase in performance for the 32/36 Twin Webbers. Aussi Speed appears to be a solid choice on quality but don't have much info on performance with their products.
My final question is should I also mill the head down more, considering where I am at it can still be easily done, than next question is with the cam and lift I have how much should I take it down and what kind of compression should I be shooting for, 9.0:1 +?? I know the stock answer for a slant 6 head is you can take .100 off but not sure if that is where I should be? Then final question, if I mill the heads what length push rods should I have?

Sorry for the long dissertation, will try to keep my future messages shorter. Looking forward to your responses.

Welcome!

Sifting through I kind of get that you are looking for advice on intake/carb. My favorites (especially with what you are trying to do) are the Offy intake and an 8007 390 cfm Holley. If you use the Dutra front section and modified stock rear section manifolds for exhaust you can retain heat under the carb. Headers would make a little more power, and do add to the Oooh Ahhhh factor, but may add cold driving issues.

Be patient and watch the For Sale section and also E-Bay. Manifolds and headers turn up frequently. Clifford has some decent parts, but are absolutely horrid to deal with. Think Kenne-Bell in the '80s bad.

Be very careful before you decide to spend any money with Clifford. They have a long and ugly reputation for being a bunch of clowns; see for example here, here, here, here, and here. Much of what they sell is inaccurately described, and a lot of it is not even slightly cost-effective. The good news is that you don't need to go to Clifford to get hot rod parts for slant-6s; there are lots of other, better options. See for example Dutra Duals and header options discussed in this thread and this one, Erson custom cams, HEI ignition upgrade, Mike Jeffreys windage trays, Hurricane intakes, other exotic intakes. Hi-perf engine buildup here, high-perf parts and build info here.

Appreciate your reply's! Kind of what I figured on Clifford. Have a bit of pondering to do before I make a decision. Will update my posting once I figure it all out and post some pictures of the build as well. My Fatman IFS showed up yesterday, so looking forward to getting this installed soon.
