what is the signifigance of the colored link on the non roller timing chain? Do you count the links to the dot like other colored link chains? Where is the info, I got the chain out of the box. I know you line the dots up but I think the colored link is a more accurate way to set it when you are looking down at a strong angle.

That is usually just a manufacturers quality control inspection mark and has no relevance to installation or anything else.

2 colored links might be useful to line things up; can't see how 1 colored link helps.

I tried counting links on a few pictures to figure out the relationship between the links and the dots. I see 25 exterior links (one colored) and 19 teeth/38 teeth. So it looks like if you line up the colored link on the crank dot, the cam dot would be 9 links away but without physically rolling it, I could be off 1/2 link or so. If anyone has one timed, visible, apart and can roll one, mark the crank dot link and count back to the cam dot counterclockwise. Double rollers should be the same but may have more teeth on both to keep the 2:1 ratio. If we could get a repeatable number, that would make timing these possible without physically lining up the dots. Turning the crank with no balancer on it is not real safe with a crescent wrench against the key.
