Need measurement of stock valve spring retainer... What's the OD of the inner retaining lip on the retainer (corresponding to ID of valve spring)? And while we're at it, the OD of the center of the valve spring pocket on the head? I'm looking though valve spring specs and want to find a valve spring that will give me the ability for more valve lift while fitting on the head without modifications or the need to buy new retainers (the 340 springs really should have new retainers). And the same or slightly higher spring pressures.... thanks |

Sealed Power VS510 springs will do this if you're comparing to stock /6 springs. I just went through this. They are slightly larger OD than the stock ones, but are retained by the stock retainers just fine and sit in the original pockets. They have a bit more pressure than stock /6 springs, but not much. They will allow maybe .100" or more added lift as they have one less coil; I did not compute the exact extra lift margin. I have maybe 10 extra new ones. (I got 6 and then had to buy a pack of 16 more!) I can send you a pix of them side by side with stock '62 springs if you like and maybe a pix installed on the stock retainers. (I have not figured the pix posting process here yet.) |

First a FYI... different companies use different part numbers for the same part, and what's worse, the same part number for different parts.... Sealed Power (or Federal Mogul) VS-510 = Melling VS-150 ^= Melling VS-510. Anyway, a Melling VS-150 has the following specs. see http://www.melling.com/Portals/0/Size%2 ... 0chart.pdf Part VS-150 Free length 2.0000 OD 1.394/1.414 ID 1.01/1.03 wire diameter 0.192 closed pressure 78-88 @ 1.6875 open pressure 172-184 @ 1.3125 coils 6.25 with LH spring twist coil bind 1.2031 This puts the coil bind valve lift at 1.6875-1.2031 = .4844 The Oregon cam camshaft I'm looking at is (1793D) is .485 @ 1.5 https://app.box.com/s/a00t8svaib0jqevitapq So I need a bit more out of the valve springs. Going with the 340 springs would need the valve retainers, and have more spring pressure. (Melling VS-1120; SP VS-678; enginetech ERV901 (lookup at rockauto); compcams 901) Don't think I need the spring pressure, and I'm frugal, so that's why I was asking since Melling has a bunch of springs around 1" ID with an OD that may be slightly smaller than stock and bind on the inside of the spring pocket and retainer. ID OD, etc of stock spring would probably help. Plus there's the option of a weak spring set just for cam break-in if you know the dimensions. Plus2: Buying a replacement spring for another engine is cheaper than buying the cam companies springs even when they're the same part. thanks |

OK, I was going for a .445 lift cam so was OK; could not find my calc sheet so you did all that. Good thing that you did because I recalled the clearance pretty wrong. Sorry 'bout that. I will look for my sheets..... And yes on the dyslexic relationship of the SP and Melling PN's in this case; that threw me for a loop for a while! |
