on the 68 barracuda, I replaced the OE 7.25 rear end with a 742 8.75 has the large yoke, for now staying with the OE 904 tranny.

I know about the 7260 / 7290 Moog 347 conversion u joint,, a couple of questions:

1) how much do I need to have the OE drive shaft shortened to work with the existing 904 and the newly installed 8.75

2) If I eventually go to a A body 833 manual, in place of the 904, will I need to change the drive shaft length again,, how much?

3) at what point (HP-comp level) would one to want to upgrade from the stock slant six drive shaft? FWIIW,, the OE drive shaft in the slant six 68 barracuda is a light weight skinny straw compared to the OE drive shaft in the slant six 83 D150, although they both take the same small yoke u joints..

From The Frank Adkins Chrysler Performace Upgrades Book:


A body 7.25 Axle Axle centerline to u Joint center on The Front of the axle housing measurement:

10.09"

All body styles 8.75 Axle same measurement:

12.35"

So it Looks Like by This measurement you would take 2.25" out of your driveshaft.

I would double check this before any cutting is done.

Pick a shop to have the cutting done and they will tell you what measurements to make. If you just tell them how long you want it then it's on you if it doesn't fit.

John, I had my first one shortened the 2.25" and it was actually too short. I settled on 1.75".

Get the shaft out of the red car from Wayne and try it. It should have an adapter joint on it already.

Thanks, all good info, I have the drive shaft out of the car, I"ll press the yoke off, put it in the yoke about an inch positive and see where it ends up, I did find a local shop that will do the cut, weld , rebalance and put in new u joints for 130.00, said typically a days turn around,

Yes you want to do some checking for sure. I am putting an 8 3/4 in the truck and while I was under there looking around I noticed the factory 8 1/4 driveline was sticking out of the transmission more than I would have liked. So once the 8 3/4 is in I will need to do some measuring!
