Think it's a rocker arm. Needs a valve lash. Right or Wrong???? https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=WSk-x7q359Y |

Sounds a little more substantial than a rocker. Rod bearings will probably be in your future. |

Does that mean I can't fix this myself |

you can fix anything yourself, you probably have an above average number of eyes, fingers and arms for a modern living human, its just a matter of time, willingness and access to equipment |

Maybe the torque convertor bolts are loose and it is rattling around. Listen to it when it shuts off. Did the noise start all of a sudden or has it been getting worse over a long period of time? Rick |

All a sudden after another test drive |

First impression is a rod or main bearing, but I agree with Rick, you should check to see if its external like a torque converter bolt came loose or something. Can you pull the inspection plate and look to see if the torque converter bolts are all snug? When it's idling where does the sound seem to come from, the bottom half, front or back? Get a sense of where it is. brian |

Also check the harmonic balancer (damper) for tightness as sometimes the keyway can crack or the outer ring can come loose and rattle/clunk. Lou |

Now that I think about it.. one day drove my truck across the yard to wash it. It wanted to die and drove horribly. After getting it there turned it off and washed it. Tried to crank up and it wouldn't do squat. But make that noise that it does at the end of the video only constant. Changed the points (tightened the torque converter bolts) and manifold bolts as well. Fired right up. I had a backyard mechanic install it and he didn't tell me untill after this the torque converter bolts were stripped, just installed them and winged it. It's the bolts. Has to be won't crank it up anymore until I get new ones |

I hope it is the torque converter bolts that are stripped, and not the holes in the converter, because if the holes are stripped you need a new torque converter, which means pulling the engine or trans. I agree that that does not sound like a rocker arm. To me it sounds definitely like metal hitting metal but external to the engine. A loose torque converter bolt could definitely make that noise as it went by the inspection plate. EDIT: If it is a connecting rod bearing, you might get lucky and be able to pull the pan, find the worn bearings, and roll a new set in. |

I'll need a new torque converter anyway switching the 727 to the 904 soon. |

Generally the torque convertor bolts all back out and there can be quite a ruckus. Especially if it has the small factory bolts. Mine came loose 3 times in the race car and they were lock-tighted in. Rodney Hargis' came loose at Mason Dixon and he at first thought he had a engine problem. Rick |
