In Doc's write-up on engine assembly in FAQ:
Quote:
Con rods that have had bearing failures and overheated - discolored should be discarded.
Presently assembling a 70 engine after the machine shop finished boring, grinding, cleaning, etc. and noticed the connecting rods had been substantially heated and swelled to shrink fit the pins into the rods. Significant discoloration of each pin rod end is evident when compared to the rest of the rod.

Should I be concerned or is this expected/anticipated normally?

This is a normal way to assemble pistons onto rods and should be no worry. I suppose a shop could overheat them, but I have not heard of this.

Worry if the big end is discolored. As Lou said, that is how most shops get a pressed pin in.
