I got my long block back from the builder (in Sunnyvale) today.

Taking DD's lead, I took an old vibration dampener and split it with a hack saw to fit easily over my crank and center the seal while I make my mark for the cam button. The split dampener fits snugly over the crank, but by hand, no need for a hammer.

To mark my timing cover for the cam button, I made a center punch by cutting and then threading a hole centering punch (from McMaster Carr). As you might expect, that metal is hard!! I ruined a die on it but it's perfect for this purpose now - there is no way that thing doesn't mark exact center of the cam bolt.

I'll drill the holes in the timing cover that go over the alignment pegs so I have a little wiggle room for the cam button alignment. I cut my Ford cam bolt shorter so it didn't bottom out (thanks for the heads up on that Don).

More pics on the cam button project as it evolves this week.

Brian

I'm simply implementing his wisdom...
