Post subject:  Engine hesitation, Where to start?

As I mentioned a while back, the /6 has a hesitation under acceleration. It has gotten much worse in the last few days. Car will hesitate from a stop and also once you reach cruising speed. At highway speeds, as long as you stay in the gas it is fine. But once you let up the engine begins to cough a sputter. I thought maybe it was the new float/carb or the ignition, but the engine will rev freely and instantly in neutral once it is up to operating temperature. Just wanted to know where I should start. Vacuum leak??

Did the hesitation happened before you changed the float?. I will start checking mixture, timing and vacuum leaks in the base of the carb. How many of these things did you change when you and your wife fixed the carb?

I had sputtering in cruise when leaving the foot of the accelerator due to a combination of too lean idle mixture and too advanced timing. You can make the idle mixture richer and see how it goes. Also check fuel level inside the carb: you can remove the economizer valve, start the car and measure with a small bar how deep it goes before getting wet (you will need to disconnect the choke diaphragm hose, and plug the vacuum source at the carb with a cap while testing).

Check timing (is the TDC mark where it should be? Sometimes the damper external ring slips. you might want to check TDC from the plugs side)

Is the carb properly set? All hoses are where they should be?

You mentioned you had to cut some of the float when you and your wife put it in the carb. Why?

Let's see what other members think. Hope your surgery is not bothering you now!

Post subject:  hesitation gone

Been out of the loop for a while on vacation. Tinkered with the carb some more last week and can now report the /6 is running pretty much flawlessly. Better than it has since I bought it anyway. The float did need to be adjusted a hair above specification. Probably something to do with the knock off aftermarket float not weighing the same as the original. Put 100 miles on the car a few days ago with zero issues. Thanks for the help!
