Post subject:  Wells ETK1 Distributor Pickup Kit 1973-80 Chrysler 6cyl

Greetings to all,

While searching for slant six electronic ignition conversion options, I ran across the item in my subject on Ebay and wondered if it might work in the earlier slant six distributors. Does anyone have experience with this part? For the $20 to buy and ship the part to me, I am tempted to get one to play with and see what the possibilities are.

I want to use this part as the trigger for a HEI conversion.

Has anyone ever played with this part that can share their experience good or bad?

Thanks much!

Post subject:  It's...

An older Wells kit, I've been forced to use the newer kits in recurves as the quality is not that much different than what is being stuffed into the SMP blue boxes these days...

That being said...

There are big differences between the 1973-1980 distributor body and mainshaft advance mechanism, and what you get in a points distributor...also the pickup plate will require a late model vacuum advance to work properly...so by the time you end up buying the parts to try the conversion you'd have spent enough to buy a standard EI distributor for the conversion... The one major thing that you don't get with the points mainshaft that you will with the EI mainshaft, is adjustability of the spring perches that will allow you to better tailor when the springs apply tension...(this also is somewhat important if you decide to try a slotted late model spring on the points dizzy mainshaft...also if you had a pile pf parts like I do from doing recurves...you can't put the EI shaft into a points dizzy body due to the casting...unless it's a 1972 points dizzy body).

Thanks to both replies. I have reviewed the HEI conversion at least twice and will a few more times. I ran across this late model option and did not know why it would not work. Thanks for the explanation.
