Post subject:  Engine Number Decode

I took the head off one of the 225 slants in my shed to find it had low comp pistons in it.
The engine has been painted all different colours by the look of it but the main colour is a yellow/creamy colour .
Anyway the engine number stamped on the block behind the alternator mount is FW 225 RL 3183 0515.
I don't know if Australia imported the slants from the USA or if they were made over here.
Can anyone decode this for me ?
Cheers,
Greg

Slant-6s were imported for the R & S models, but built locally at Tonsley Park starting with the AP5s, so you will do well to find local Australian engine decode info.

That said, using North American codes this engine could plausibly be decoded as a 1970-model low-compression regular-fuel 225 engine built at Windsor (Ontario) Engine Plant on April 15, 1970.

How many freeze plugs are there on the manifold side of the engine block, and what casting number do you find there?

It is a 5 welch/freeze plug engine .
The raised casting numbers are 2806830-4.
Then further along it has 04030 and straight underneath that it has AAWJ.
Then further along it has a big AM .

One thing I noticed about the head of this motor is that is has a smaller hole where the heater line goes in compared to all my other slant 6 heads.

Another head I have .

These are some other markings on the head .

Low comp pistons .

Combustion chamber seems deeper and to have a different shape to my other heads .

2843169 is the 1967 revision of the cylinder head. The revision versus the previous 2206035 was indeed in the combustion chamber shape, which was modified for more complete combustion.

I am not sufficiently familiar with the vagaries of Slant-6 production at Tonsley Park (Australia) to know whether the US 5-freezeplug block 2806830 was produced in Australia, or if Australian-produced blocks kept the 3-plug design. I do know Slant-6s (Imported? Locally built?) were installed in Australian-built Valiants for export to countries like South Africa even after the domestic Australian cars switched to the Hemi-6 for 1970.

The block and head casting numbers you show here are not inconsistent with the Windsor/April 15 1970 decode I provided earlier.

Thanks Dan.
All I can find out about Chrysler engine production in Australia is that they opened a engine manufacturing plant at Lonsdale in 1968 , but there is no mention of producing the slant 6 .
Maybe they decided to still import the slant 6 knowing they would be going to the hemi 6 in 1970 .

Sounds like a great candidate for forced induction!

Please explain ?
Do the low comp motors have stronger internals ?

No, but low compression engines live better with forced induction since you are starting with lower compression to begin with. The lower the initial compression, the more air you can force into the cylinder before detonation.
