So, I have been calculating some horsepower figures based on some slant six records. It seems like the highest power for a normally aspirated slant is about 300 HP (Doug Dutra). Does anyone know if this is accurate? -Matt |

I think the upper limit for a NA engine with no adders (carb/EFI, cam, headers, compression, head work, quench distance, timing)...is about 350 hp assuming you put into play all the hot items and improvements there may be more if you can afford the unobtanium items (Howards Billet Head, etc)....The other part of the deal will be to get friendly with your local yards and V-8 guys so you have a fair amount of blocks to work with and have checked for best options to overbore. The low to mid-200's are easy to get, after that you are wanting to look at every little thing to get one more HP....the down side though will mean that you may be stuck with high octane fuel and being a track only car.... |

Cameron Tilley made over 370 HP at the crank on an engine dyno about 5 yrs. ago. Madmax/6 (Mark Etheridge) on this site has made nearly that amount, if you go by dragstrip numbers. 300 HP is not easy, but within reach for many people. 225 HP on pump gas is fairly straightforward, but is still not trivial. I was just curious how far people might have gotten with normal aspiration on these engines. I am just shooting for 225 (1 HP per cubic inch). -Matt |

Sounds quite doable. Please see this engine matrix build thread for suggestions: http://www.slantsix.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=23314 This is part of the "FAQ" thread in the engine section of this site. Lots more info there too... Lou |

No dyno, but by my calculations I am at about 305 at the crank. |
