I'm in the process of building my engine up and I decided to get the later crank and transmission input shaft. I got the larger input shaft, but I'm still having trouble locating the crank. I'm doing this swap so that I can buy a better torque converter more easily. Is there an option to have a machine shop put some type of ring on the end of the crank, or should I just keep looking? Worst case scenario, I have to have a converter special made to fit this odd combo. |

You can machine-out the counterbore in the end of the crank to the larger size, this leaves a real thin raised shoulder but it works. (Don't store the crank on it's end) Later cranks should not be that hard to find, where are you located? DD |

you can goto advance or autozone and buy a crank kit for like 100-150 bucks with bearings. a 225 crank is no problem, but i think you'd have trouble with getting 170-198 cranks. -james |

I located on the coast of North Carolina. I have found quite a few old slants in the yards, but they won't sell me just a crank. I just don't have the room to have a second engine at my house to tear down. I really don't want to pay $150 for a new crank at Autozone when I see complete engines selling for $40 and up. I beginning to wonder if I should just use a complete later engine in my rebuild. For some reason I really want to keep the original '65 block... must be sentimental - the soul of the machine. There would probably be some balancing issues with a block that I build from different engines. I may just have to buy a complete engine and make the space. |

If you are going to order a converter, anyway, why not get one with the small pilot? Both my converters, have the small pilot and the large spline setup. Then you can use the converter on the small pilot crank, and with a inexpensive bushing, on a late, large pilot crank. |

I thought about that Charlie. In fact, I called the company that made your converter and mentioned your name. He recommended that I get the larger spline setup. Andre seems like a great guy to do business with, but that converter will still cost $200 more dollars than some other setups that perform just as well. Midwest for example. Joe |

Joe, let me see if I understand right. You have an early crank (which has the small pilot?) and you want to use a later converter? I have a sleeve that fits the big pilot to use an early converter. |

That's right mmsc. But why would you want to fit the early converter. Or did you mean you have a sleve that fits a later converter to the early crank? |

Yes, the sleeve fits in the crank to use the smaller converter nose. Sorry. |
