Post subject:  ignition issues

I recently began having a problem with the ignition in my dodge dart. The car will turn over and start instantly with no problems but as soon as I stop turning it over it dies. I changed the starter and it hasn't made a difference. It can shift into different gears and move but as soon as I let go of the key it dies. I can have the ignition replaced tomorrow morning but if there is something that I'm missing or not trying I would need to know. any ideas?

Don't know why you would replace the starter -- it is obviously working; its only job is to rotate the engine until it's running under its own power, and we know it does that.

Also don't know what you're planning on having replaced when you say you can "replace the ignition". The ignition system has many parts in it.

Your trouble is most likely a bad ballast resistor, the classic symptom of which is "Engine starts, but dies as soon as the key is released to the run-position".

Make sure to get appropriate service manuals as soon as you can.

i replaced ot for 2 reasons. I had replaced the starter about 6 months ago and recently I noticed a loud grinding sound during ignition. I just used my warranty for an exchange and the grinding is gone. I thought that the two may have been correlated. as far as what I was going to have replaced in the ignition system, I was going to have the part of the ignition where the key is inserted.

I will look into where the ballast resistor is located in my car being that I can't find a detailed picture in my Haynes manual and it's too late and too dark to see it outside right now

Look here for several photos of said ballast resistor; for viewing pleasure only, not an endorsement to purchase from this vender.

What year make and model do you have? Unless someone rewired and moved or took out the B R it should be easy to see in the engine compartment.

Look back on the firewall.

What year/model is the car, and is the ignition stock/original? There are 2 types of ballasts used in the stock system.

The Haynes manual is just a 'meh' level of OK...hence the suggestion to get a factory service manual.

Your Haynes manual will only wind up making you more confused and poorer. Get the manuals I linked above, as soon as you possibly can.
