The ricer crowd is fond of attaching a "catch can" between the intake manifold and the PCV to keep oil vapor out of the intake as much as possible. While our slants don't usually rev up to high RPM on a regular basis, I was curious about how much oil my truck is gulping in. Quite a lot as it turns out.

Other people have talked about that (at least air oil filter options), here's a thread:

I was amazed how much oil collected in just 100 miles. I plan to put one on the wife's Escape Hybrid.

Some with late model direct injection use that method as it keeps the gunk from making deposits on the intake valves, which are unwashed by gasoline in those motors. I think the latest DI motors have less issues with this, but it doesn't hurt to use a catch can.

I guess the amount of oil in the catcher will depend on how much blowby and piston sealing you have, as suggested in the video. If you need to add a quart of oil each 200 to 500 miles without the catcher, then for sure you're going to catch a lot of oil. If you have a newer vehicle (that does not require adding oil in 5000+ miles), I will think you'll catch less.

Tired slants are known for being oil drinkers (so the infamous phrase "check the gas and fill the oil, please" in each gas pump stop...)

What a big capacitor? LOL.

Somehow I don't think that would be necessary due to strict parameters catalytic converter equipped vehicles need to keep from plugging said converter and fouling its several o2 sensors. In other words there ain't no liquid oil leaving valve covers of modern vehicles.

Some of that atomized air born oil within a slant's valve cover sucked into PCV may be due to poor, or baffle free valve cover. I know that the valve train on my slant spits a lot of oil over 800 rpm as witnessed during lash adjustments, needing to idle that thing down to below 500 rpm to keep from coating windshield, inner fender, floor and the fat creep wrenching on the thing with nice coat of 10W30.

So the next question that popes into mind; would one just dump captured oil from PCV system back to engine via oil fill orifice, or dispose of otherwise?

That's a good one!

I think this engine had looser tolerances from the beginning, and now that it has a few miles on it the oil is really flowing. I decided to measure it and pour it right back in, then collect several hundred miles of data to see if oil consumption improves. A compression test is coming soon.

My last slant was delivering about 50-100ml of oil between oil changes, say 3k-5k miles, depending on how I was running it. I suppose when I was harder on it, I got more, but I never correlated any observations.

I use an aluminum gas filter canister modified as a catch can, no filter element, and just the (cooler) temperature of the can is the mechanism to catch hot vapors as they pass through. I drilled/tapped it for a stopcock on the bottom to drain it. I can send pics if anyone is interested.
