I stripped the head from the original race motor so we could get it milled. Some of these exhaust valves look kinda rough, but I don't really know what I'm doing. I'd love some opinions from the older and wiser types.

The following picture shows the exhaust valves from 6, 5, and 4. #4 exhaust valve was replaced when the motor was rebuilt in 2004, but the others are of unknown age. My main concern is the ridge above the valve seat surface (which is probably the worst of all on #5, but not present at all on #4).

I'm also mildly concerned about the rust scale on the shank. 5 and 6 seemed the worst in this case, but the others had some as well. The following picture is a closer view of #5 and #3. Could this be the result of a persistent exhaust leak at the manifold?

The intake valves all look good, aside from being pretty gummed up on top. I'm guessing this is due to the motor running fairly rich for most of its history.

What do y'all think, should I replace these exhaust valves? It's a "race motor," but only in the sense that it gets beat on a lot. It doesn't make a hell of a lot power.

they dont look unexpected for a 40 year old (or more) motor. i would say replace em and do a valve job, since the heads apart.

Exhaust valves lead a hard life. I would replace them. The deposits on the intake valves are probably from oil rather than fuel.

If your going to replace them and do a valve job, you might as well step up to the engine builder valves.

I seriously thought about it, but I'm running short on time at this point. My machine shop still hasn't even decked the head yet, and I need this thing back together soon.

I've got a spare head that I might have some more serious work done on in the meantime, though.

I am facing a head rebuild as soon as I get the car (62 valiant, 170)

what do you expect to pay for the head work? I haven't rebuilt an engine since my Volkswagen and my flath ead before that.

I have no idea what a complete rebuild with all new valves, seats, guides and whatever else would cost. (My head has stuck valves)

Not sure how much a full valve job goes, but I'm paying $95 just to get my head milled in Houston.
