My 80 Volare ran poorly when I got it, converted to HEI, runs better but still not good. I had the ign powered off the alt output post, start the car then turn off the ignition switch, (HEI is powered separately) it smooths out. If I hook up the ignition straight to the battery and start it it still runs rough till I shut off the key. Any ideas? Voltage is good, module is powered through a relay.

2 possibilities come to mind:
1) Bad diodes in the alternator making the alternator output voltage have a stronger AC component (voltage ripple) that is messing with the HEI
2) The HEI does not like the higher system voltage present with the alternator running.

I would:
a) measure the system voltage with and without the key on and see if it is abnormally high. And does it get worse if you rev the engine to fast idle RPM's?
b) teel everyone here more about the HEI components you are using

If the wires between module and distributor are mixed up, the engine may run, but not like it should. Try switching the wires.

Olaf

BTW, have you adjusted the valves?

No, 80 was the last year of mechanical lifters. Hydraulic started in 81.
