When I was reinstalling my starter, I noticed that somebody had applied some copper colored grease to the pinion (my remanufactured starter had failed (I know Dan, I know....) awhile back and I had someone throw one on for me when I was out of town).

I've always been told never to lube the starter gear as it might contaminate other things (clutch on manual cars), collect dirt and generally be a nuisance rather than help anything, true?
