Post subject:  zero compression in cylinder #1

Hi to all you slanters.
My slant started acting up last week. I noticed oil coming out of the #1 cylinder exhaust.. I checked compression,, Zero!!!! needled wont even move..
What would or could be the common Dx.

I suspect its in the head some how..

Thank you..

Have you checked the valve lash?

Was the plug oily when you pulled it? Making any unusual noises?

For you to have not even a little compression it's gotta be something big, not a cracked head. Maybe a head gasket or hole in the piston. Unless a valve got mangled, but you would have noticed that when you took the valve cover off.

I have not took the valve cover off. a few months ago I changed piston rings and had the head serviced. I never felt comfortable with the job the machine shop did. no matter how much I adjusted the valves, I could never get rid of a tick, tick noise.

Lots of oil on the spark plug, and oil coming out the exhaust on piston one..

I guess I should take the valve cover off for starters..

Oily plug + recent piston ring change + no compression suggests a problem with the rings sealing the combustion chamber. Oil control and compression both rely on properly installed and seated rings.

Pull the valve cover and inspect the valve lash and valve guides, but you may need to pull the head and check the piston rings.
