Post subject:  Rev limit

So just to cover the basics of what I'm working with, I've got a '64 Dart 170, with a 80k mile stock 170 out of a '66 Valiant. The only modifications to the engine is currently a slightly larger Carter 1bbl off of a '64 225, Petronix conversion and a thrush muffler. It still has the stock down pipe and all to the muffler.

Recently on a Mustang Dyno it made 60hp and 80tq at the wheels. The car runs great! The maintenance is kept up with fresh plugs, oil change, air filter, valve adjustment, and a new timing set. The car gets 25mpg in town with the 4spd OD and a 3.55 gear in the back. All this is to say that the car is mechanically sound and tuned properly.

My question is how high should a stock 170 rev to?

On my Sun tach, and according to the Dyno, 4600rpm is about all it can turn under a load. This may be completely normal, I'm just not sure. The engine sounds like it's turning higher than that to me, but that's compared to my Neon R/T that I can easily turn to 7600rpm.

Next question, how high would a "built" 170, (high compression, cam, headwork, springs, headers, etc.), be capable of turning rpm wise?

A stock Slant with a 1 bbl will run out of steam between 4000 and 4500. Sometimes you can get them to rev higher, but they aren't making any power, just noise.

My 232 has been 7000, but I normally shifted it at 6500/6750ish.

By the Wallace calculators it made 370 on spray, around 250 N/A.

The 170 in my '66 Barracuda is fully built for running at Bonneville. Last time out I was shifting at 7,000. Engine dyno said I had 252 HP @ 6,800 rpm. Speed Week racing begins on Saturday, August 8......

I have turned my 170 nitrous engine, a little over 7,000 rpm, but it didn't run and better 1/4 mile times then 6,000 rpm. This was with different tire/gear combo.

PLEASE check to make sure your tachometer is not set to "8" on the back. If so, you will be reading a much lower RPM (3/4 as much) than you are actually turning. I know at least one person who has blown motors up because of this.

A stock 170 should turn 5000-6000 no problem. A stock 225 is more like 4000-4500.

All the best,

Lou

my motor is a somewhat built 225 and I can reach 5000 rpm with out losing power up a hill.

I've checked the tach before. It's set on 6cyl. It's more fun to watch set on 4cyl though! ;D

I do not exceed 4000 on my 225. When I tromp on it from stop or low speeds while I'm in first gear, pedal to the floor, my A904 shifts into second at about 3100-3200 rpm, does that sound about right? Seems right, good launch for a street machine, no shift kit or anything. I set my kick down so if I'm cruising at say 45 mph in 3rd and stomp on the pedal, it kicks down to second pretty quickly, gets up to about 3100-3200 and shifts back into third.

I think at WOT it should be shifting at 4000 rpm both 1-2 & 2-3 up shift. A little adjustment of kick-down linkage will bring a higher shift point.

I have used up all of the adjustment in my kickdown linkage and it shifts at 4000 RPM. Adjusting past this point causes the transmission to kick down at excessive road speeds.

I'll play with my kick down a bit, it did seem like it was just on the beginning edge of where it worked properly, That is, when I was adjusting it, I went from a point where it didn't kick down, to just where it did kick down, perhaps there's a lot more adjustment past that point that I have to play with.

Fun stuff.

Mine shifts at 3000 1-2

4000 2-3

Kickdown is adjusted correctly.
