I installed the Remy 16054 today. NOTE: All apparently went well, but when I started her up I heard a slight grinding noise. It turns out the little metal plate between the starter and the bell housing didn't quite align with the new starter, got bent when I bolted the starter in, and the flex plate bolts where scraping against it a bit. I removed the starter, straightened out the plate, reamed the holes a bit so that it aligned with the bolts and the starter better, then reinstalled. I have to say, that little starter is a HUGE improvement over that clunky remanufactured boat anchor that was on there. It's amazing the difference in weight and size of this vs the old style unit. As Dan points out, remanufactured parts often have sloppy tolerances and little or no care put into them. My old (newly remanufactured) starter made all kinds of racket when it was engaged, sometimes it sounded like it was breaking teeth off the ring gear. This Remy unit is really quiet, and starts up the slant instantly. I'll not go back... brian |

Rockauto lists those for $152 plus shipping. They are "premium remanufactured," whatever that means. Rockauto's most expensive slant starter is $54. Is that Remy unit worth the extra $100? |

Less weight, lower current draw, faster cranking, less noise, and more reliability if only because these starters from 2005-2008 haven't been through four decades' worth of repeated sandblasting and abusive "remanufacturing". That's worth money. But if not worth that much extra to you, you can dispense with the less weight, lower draw, faster cranking, and less noise and just get the better reliability in a brand-new original-type Chrysler starter at Old Car Parts Northwest for around $80 or so last time I checked. |

Dan, yes, I know it's a reman, but like you said it hasn't been through 50 years of being rebuilt over and over and over. For example, the aluminum case is flawless, no pitting or obvious signs of wear, looks brand new, the threads in the threaded hole (now gone because I drilled them out) were flawless. Seems "snug" as well, tight tolerances, for example as a crude qualitative test I shook it in my hands and it made no noises, the old one had a clanking of some sort, not sure what was jostling around in there...but it was very "loose" if you know what I mean. Yeah, I'm not sure the video does it justice, I had the volume turned up to make sure it caught the sound accurately. Rick has a good point as well.....hyperpaks!!!!!!!  The work required to install it is minimal, drill out one threaded hole, countersink hole for the one bell housing bolt so it doesn't interfere (I used a shallow head 145,000 psi cap screw), I drilled the tab and put a screw to secure the ignition wire rather than use a 1/4" blade connector (I think Rick did this too). On mine there was also fixing the alignment issue on the sheet metal cover plate between the starter and the bell housing but that was 5 minutes with my rat tail file. Oh, I did have to get a longer battery cable, mine was 6" too short. It actually fit, but I wanted to run it under the starter and up to the post rather than directly to the starter post. brian |

Don't forget also, there's a nice benefit to a starter that draws relatively low current: it leaves more power (higher line voltage) for the ignition to fire during cranking, making for quicker and easier starts. |

Hmmmm. OK. I am sold. The next time I need a slant starter I will try one of those. OF course, that means I have to burn through my stock of used ones I have on the shelf in the garage.

To me this starter is akin to the Remflex gaskets for the manifolds or the silicone Real Gaskets for the valve cover or that awesome rigid tranny pan gasket Dan turned us on to...these are drastic improvements to the older systems. No brainers. There is the price difference, but even there, they save lots of headaches, so well worth it in my opinion. There is one area where I go old school all the way, the rear seal. I use rope seal. Only because I've had the newer type leak, but never the rope seal, properly installed. brian |
