Post subject:  My 70 Dart Slant Six Build thread

Hey everyone. I'm creating this thread to kind of encourage my progress in rebuilding my 225 Slant Six. I'll be updating this post with pictures of what (little) I accomplish from time to time. Feel free to post thoughts, and tips on things I might have missed, or things I could do that would work better. I've taken engines apart, but getting them back together in a proper fashion is a much more difficult task.

Also, if anyone would be so kind as to point out a thread about the rocker shaft and it's alignment, I'd appreciate it. The factory service manual just says to make sure the "flat" of the shaft is pointed up and to the front. Admittedly, I don't have the best vision in the world (I could never be a paint and body guy), but I can not tell a single difference from the front or rear of that rocker shaft. I can, however, see the oiling holes, and where they should line up with the rockers themselves. Is there really a front and back to this thing?

Thanks for that link ski! I really appreciate it.

So after looking over the pictures on that thread, especially the one with the "flat" shown, I thought this would be cake. Well, apparently my rocker shaft does NOT have a flat in it at all.

So after looking at it closely, there is only one way that seems logical to line it up, so I did it like this:

With the oiling holes facing the valve springs, the holes line up with the grooves in the rockers themselves, so I'm pretty sure this is the right way to do it. (Edit: I was WRONG!

Anyway, just got a message from a friend and I have to go. I'll post more pics and info latter :) Thanks for watching.

Not correct. The oil holes should face down, and toward the valve springs.
Flip the shaft end for end.

So more info and pics about the car itself. I purchased this car my Senior year of High School (April 2002). It was originally purchased in California by a lady who then willed the car to a family who went to my Church. It's pretty clean, especially for an un restored car.

When I bought it, the brakes were out, and the heater core was looped to prevent water from getting to it. I replaced the rear wheel cylinders, and put in a new heater core. Did belts, hoses, plugs, wires, fuel filter, ect. She ran like a champ, and took me from MN to WY and back 3 times between 2002 and 2003 for Tech College.

After Tech College, I was able to purchase a Jeep for a Daily, so this became my cruise car. I replaced the exhaust manifold in 2007 (the original one came out in two pieces). However, I never had them plained as a set. So when I started to drive it back to the cruses in 2008, the intake was pulling in some fresh air, and would kill at idle. I drove her back to the shop, and at that point the starter gave out. Since the odometer had recently gone back to all 0's, I figured it was a great time to rebuild the worn slant six.

Well, here we are 7 years latter. Buying a house, friends getting married, ect. You name it, I've had to be busy with it. Since I have a few weeks of work shut down this year, I'm hoping to get the car back and on the road, but also I'm very limited in how much I can spend, due to said shut down weeks.

Luckily I have my other Mopar for cruises.

And my off brand Slant Six for a daily:

So today was a short day in the storage garage. I went back and changed the rocker around so that the holes face the correct direction.

Re lubed everything back and and re torqued it all down.

I still have no idea how to look for any proper marking that could be considered the "flat" of the rocker shaft, and I'm very disappointed in the lack of help my giant factory service manual has been. It has steared me wrong on numerous occasions thus far.
