| Post subject: | strut rod bushings |
The original strut rod bushings for my 63 Dart are toast and getting replaced in my front end rebuild. The original bushings like these of which new ones have been supplied in my PST kit are 1 piece bushings sleeving the front end of the stut rod and sandwiched by two large thick metal washers. Yet I understand there's a 'new and improved' 2 piece design from Moog. I've seen some 'strut rod bushings' like these that look just like a disc of rubber that you'd sandwich by the washers. No rubber sleeving the rod as it extends through the frame. You can probably understand my confusion as the two look completely different. Which one is better to use for my '63 Dart? |

In 2008 when I rebuilt front end of my 67 Dart I used the original one piece strut rod bushing replacing previous owner's installed hockey puck two piece so called improved bushings. I drove the car about 18,000 miles with one piece bushing, and than installed the improved two piece hockey puck type which is used on B and C body cars from factory. I think the two piece units provide better fore & aft control of lower control arm during braking and acceleration loading. Also achieving correct torque setting on nut facing forward was much more positive compared to one piece bushing. And, if I were to replace currently installed two piece bushings, I would use them again. Newer Mopar platforms use the same two piece design such as K Car derivatives. |

Thanks wjajr, that makes sense. This seems like a dumb question but WTH: I assume the "two piece" improved design they're talking about is one 'puck' fore, and one aft of the frame, sandwiched by the torqued down washers? So there are two 'pucks' per rod. Do I have that right? UPDATE: answered my own question after searching and found this article. |

I put the one-piece bushings on my car the first time, but it appears they are too long to use the thick metal washers. I had to cut them shorter to fit, but they started to come apart after a couple LeMons races, so obviously I screwed something up. I eventually replaced those with the two-piece MOOG bushings. You can't see it in the eBay link's picture, but the opposite side of each "puck" has a raised circle which fits into the K-frame hole to center the bushing properly. These are holding up fine. |

Thanks. It's weird how the 1-piece bushings are moulded so different than the hockey-puck style. I guess you're just supposed to torque the washers to speck and let the ends 'squish' under the washers. |
